ZANDERS Feinpapiere AG Showcases Nek Chand’s Icon “Kingdom”
Bergisch Gladbach, Germany—Nek Chand, from India, has created an extraordinary, fascinating and mysterious icon which is, without doubt, the highlight of the ZANDERS “Icons on ikono” Design Series. In the recently published booklet, the maker of fine paper from Bergisch Gladbach in Germany, does not just provide an insight into the source of inspiration and creativity of this Indian artist, the company also presents us with impressive shots of Chand’s collection of close to 2,000 sculptures located on 10 hectares of land near Chandigarh in India. With as many as 5,000 visitors a day, his kingdom counts as the most visited attraction in India, after the Taj Mahal, and is considered the largest public artwork in the world.

Premium-Quality Special Edition Print and Booklet Published
The special print, 80 x 60 cm, four-colour limited edition, printed on ikono silk with printing varnish in FM raster, provides us with an impression of Nek Chand’s icon “Kingdom” par excellence. Parallel to this, the ikono.8 Booklet features magnificent shots of this unusual project. Both can be ordered from www.ikono.de or www.zanders.de.

Dreams as a Source of Inspiration
In 1958, Nek Chand (born in 1924) worked on the vision of a kingdom of his dreams in a refuge in the jungle close to the Indian town of Chandigarh, originally planned as the capital of the province of Punjah by Le Corbusier. Waste material such as coal buckets, myriad shattered stones, electrical cable, fittings and other unwanted items and objects inspired him to create his fantastic sculptures. He often worked during the night, as he was scared of being discovered using state property in a prohibited manner. 14 years later, a state construction team working clearing the jungle discovered Chand's kingdom. His creation is a fascinating, labyrinth-like mosaic-world from the realm of his dreams featuring waterfalls, rivers and pools in which courtyards, tunnels, stairs, doors and plains are reflected, populated by warriors, village dwellers, dancers, musicians, monks, beggars, cows, dogs, cats, tigers, elephants and many other beings.
