ZANDERS-Calendar 2003: stillness is the new dynamic
(Bergisch Gladbach, November 27th, 2002) The ZANDERS calendar 2003, entitled “stillness is the new dynamic”, is the antithesis of the normal pictorial language generally seen in calendars. As an expression of the “design of time”, the monthly motifs convey moments of calmness and oases of stillness in what are normally busy environments. The peace and tranquillity exuded by the motifs become apparent through their contrast to the surroundings. Through its concept, the ZANDERS calendar 2003 allows people to take a breather – on a spiritual, physical, and visual level.
The ZANDERS calendar 2003 invites the onlooker to pause for a moment, to take a break from the routine and simply observe the motifs. Oases of stillness are juxtaposed with hectic activity and a hectic environment, thus creating a new impulse for a new dynamic. The calendar was designed by Erich Sommer and Allmut Piorr, Cologne. The photos were taken by Radka Leitmeritz and René Hallen (Paris). For Evgen Bavcar, photographer, philosopher and author, the pictures in the ZANDERS calendar 2003 force the observer to forget the time which has passed within us. In his foreword to the ZANDERS calendar 2003, he writes: “The contrasts of sight lead us to silence. This allows us to better understand that which has gone before us and the events which are yet to come in the unavoidable modernity of the future“.
Through its unusually usual motifs, the ZANDERS calendar 2003 shows that it is first and foremost a design object. The peaceful aura of the motifs is reinforced by clear typography and the fact that only white paper has been used. However, the calendar also stands out due to its functionality. The calendar section has been deliberately separated from the respective motif. This offers the user the advantage of being able to reserve short blocks of time in the calendar for moments of reflection.
The varied paper types used in the ZANDERS calendar 2003 reflect the diverse applications of ZANDERS’ high-quality fine-papers. January, for example, features a disco on ikono gloss paper: a scene dominated by intense activity, dancing people, and an aquarium which serves as a conscious opposite to the tumult. Both images are present in a single picture. It radiates calmness and invites passers-by to pause and reflect for a moment. The year 2003 is rounded off with ZANDERS CHROMOLUX paper, upon which a brightly-illuminated aluminium ladder stands juxtaposed to the busy, working atmosphere of a construction site.
