ZANDERS today: Mr. Blondal, You have been using ZANDERS fine papers for your art publications for some 20 years. What makes them so popular?
Blondal: It`s a question of quality apiration. I regard myself as an advocate of detail. All parameters, production and, not least of all, the paper – must combine to create an optimal impression.
ZANDERS today: Which ZANDERS papers did you select for your latest remarkable book, „The Architecture of Jorn Utzon“ ?
Blondal: The inside pages are printed on ikono silk, and the section of 12 sheets at the beginnig and the end of the book on ZETA. This material is worthy of an architect with the stature of Jorn Utzon. the aim was for the reader to embark on a voyage of discovery – in every respect.
ZANDERS today: How did you discover ZANDERS?
Blondal:.It was in 1982. I had just rejected the offer of another manufacturer and asked my printer to recommend the best possible paper grade for my „Three-Year-Book“ , a depiction of the work of Denmark`s most accomplished artists.
ZANDERS today: Where did the partnership with ZANDERS go from there?
Blondal: I have since published between 60 and 70 high-quality art titles on ZANDERS paper and won several international awards for my work, including two from ZANDERS. In 1991 and 1992 I received accolades from ZANDERS for two of may books written by Per Kirkeby, in recognition of outstanding design, lithography and printing.
ZANDERS today: Did Jorn Utzon have any say in the choice of paper?
Blondal: Yes, he did. I showed him the ZANDERS collection and he was very impressed. We made the choice together. Believe me, Mr. Utzon is very demanding when it comes to quality.
ZANDERS today: How did you feel about the depiction of Sydney Opera House on the TV screen during the Olympic Games?
Blondal: I was rather odd. Last year in March I flew to Sydney with the book`s author, Professor Richard Weston. We took pictures of the building at night and during daytime in constantly changing light conditions. These very different impressions make a particularly strong impact in combination with the selected paper.
ZANDERS today: Mr. Blondal, thank you for the interview.
