| Zanders calendar: Zeitraum 2004 transcends the limits of traditional calendars

(Bergisch Gladbach, 25 November 2003) “Zeitraum 2004” is the title of the 2004 Zanders calendar, which M-real Zanders is publishing on the occasion of its 175th anniversary in 2004. The Zanders calendar transcends the limits of traditional calendars: the form and content of the calendar become three-dimensional. Spaces become pictures. The linear and circular formats for displaying time are linked in a helix.

The Zanders calendar “Zeitraum 2004” is based on the basic idea of linking the hitherto linear concept of time with the rotation of a clock. This mechanism creates a spatial helix. This is the basis of the creative implementation of the calendar. A multiple helix indicates both the advance of time and the rhythmic recurrence of the hours, days and months. This annual helix is brought to life with the aid of a 3D program. The motifs of the calendar are snapshots from a journey with a virtual camera through the helix – the period of time of 2004. This produces an overall motif that stretches over the whole 12 months. Moreover, a specific motif emerges for each month.

Three-dimensional calendar

The helix also serves in the construction of the calendar. The circumference of the circle is thus divided into seven segments for the seven days of the week. Thereby each day not only progresses one segment further around the circle, it also makes a step downwards. As a consequence of this a spiral with four revolutions corresponding to the four weeks results for each month.
The individual spirals of the monthly calendars rotate about their transverse axis from a vertical into a horizontal perspective.

Unlimited overall impressions

The person looking at the calendar determines for himself or herself how the calendar “Zeitraum 2004” looks each month. The twelve monthly boxes can be rotated or erected individually. An almost unlimited number of overall impressions can thus be created in the course of the year. Space is conferred upon time. For Andrej Kupetz, Managing Director of the German Design Council, the “fascinating presentation of that which links time and space in a calendar” forms “the basis for ‘Zeitraum 2004’“.

The Zanders calendar “Zeitraum 2004” was designed by the Wiesbaden agency 3deluxe. The printing on Zanders CHROMOLUX, Zanders ikono and Zanders ZETA captivates the beholder with interesting effects. These are made possible by the use of opaque white and silver. Additional effects are achieved through the use of coloured print varnish, foil embossing and UV gloss varnish.
