| M-real Zanders restructuring continuing as planned: Zanders autocopy carbonless prices will be increased; More digital imaging business

(Bergisch Gladbach, 24 November 2003) M-real Zanders is continuing it’s restructuring and has reached an important milestone in the Reflex mill in Düren. The share of digital and premium fine papers could be increased to 25 % of the Reflex mill capacity. The Reflex mill’s biggest product is Carbonless Fine Paper, where it is one of Europe´s leading producers. An investment program in Reflex of some 25 Mio. € resulted in a headcount reduction of more than 25 % or 200 people to a total of 560 employees now. Additionally, the coating and finishing capabilities in the Reflex mill were developed to be able to produce value added inkjet papers for digital imaging applications.

Based on the cost reductions, the Reflex mill could successfully sustain its market share in the European carbonless market. The development program will be continued, as the profitability is not satisfactory due to unacceptably low margins in the carbonless market.

Olmar Albers, Vice President Sales & Marketing for M-real Specialities business: “The Digital Imaging business will be further increased. For Zanders autocopy, the plan is to keep the market share, while at the same time focussing on margin improvement. In addition to incremental cost savings, sales price increases for Zanders autocopy carbonless will therefore be indispensable for early 2004.”
